Schismatoglottis prietoi is an aquatic and semi-aquatic plant species belonging to the family Araceae, endemic to the Philippines. This species is unique within its genus, as it is the only known Schismatoglottis species capable of growing in a fully aquatic habitat. Found in fast-flowing freshwater rivers within lowland forests. The leaves of Schismatoglottis prietoi are pale green to green, smooth, oblong to elliptical in shape with sharply pointed tips, and have broadly wavy edges. It is characterized by a single white flower that produces an unpleasant odor at its base.

Schismatoglottis prietoi is often used in aquascaping due to its resemblance to Anubias species, though it grows faster and has softer leaves. The plant is adaptable, thriving in most aquarium conditions, including very poor light. It produces runners when planted in the bottom layer of an aquarium, making it a good choice for ground coverage. It is particularly suitable for smaller aquariums, like Nano Cubes, and is expected to become popular in aquascaping due to its compact growth and small size.

For optimal growth, Schismatoglottis prietoi prefers medium to low light conditions and temperatures ranging from 20 to 28 °C. It can grow in a variety of substrates, including nutrient-rich aqua soil or inert substrates like sand or gravel. The plant can be planted directly into the substrate or attached to rocks or driftwood. It tolerates a pH of 6.5 to 7.5 and can thrive in soft to hard water. While CO2 injection is optional, it can accelerate growth. The plant propagates through rhizomes, and dividing these rhizomes is the typical method of propagation.

In conclusion, Schismatoglottis prietoi is a fascinating, easy-to-care-for plant that offers a great aesthetic appeal for aquarists and is versatile in its planting and propagation methods. Its adaptability to different aquarium conditions and its potential for aquascaping make it a desirable choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists.
